About Gleadless.net
Gleadless is a former village, now a suburb of Sheffield located in the south eastern portion of the city. The name originates from the Old English 'Glida Leah' meaning a kite clearing in a wood. Norton is derived from 'Nord-Tun', meaning the north farmstead.
Gleadless.net contains recent and historic photo's taken in and around Carterhall Lane, Charnock, Gleadless, Gleadless Townend, Gleadless Valley, Graves Park, Heeley, Hemsworth, Herdings, Hollinsend, Hurlfield, Jordanthorpe, Lightwood Lane, Newfield Green, Norton, the former Norton Aerodrome / RAF Norton, The Oakes/The Oaks and Oakes Park/Oaks Park (ancestral home of the Bagshawe family), Ridgeway and Stoneley Wood. There are pictures from Coal Aston of the rural fringe of southern Sheffield, and images of local farms, parks, roads, churches and schools.
Gleadless.net emerged in 2003 as very few photographs were available over the Internet. The website welcomes people from near and far, and currently attracts over 1500 visitors each week.
